About FOWA

FOWA (Friends of West Ashton)

The name FOWA stands for ‘Friends of West Ashton’ and this name was developed and chosen by the children of West Ashton C.E Primary School. FOWA welcomes all parents, friends and governors to join or attend our meetings and events. The support of the wider community is invaluable to our fundraising efforts.
FOWA has been an integral part of the school community for many years. In its time FOWA has raised thousands of pounds, which has been spent on improving equipment and resources to enhance our children's education and the facilities in school in general. But FOWA is about much, much more than just fundraising. The PTA (Parent Teacher Association) exists to provide closer links between home and school, and it is an excellent way to bring staff, parents and friends together socially in support of the school, working towards a common goal. It is fun too - just ask any of the FOWA committee members or helpers. Obviously as in any organisation, there are times when it is more 'challenging', but with the continued support of parents and staff, our PTA has always succeeded in its efforts.
All parents and members of the school community can get involved if they want to, even if they only have a small amount of time available, and all parents are automatically entitled to be members of FOWA when their children join our school.

FOWA is extremely conscious of the ethos and morals of our school, and we try very hard when organising and planning events to respect this. Not all of our events are run as fundraisers. Some events such as children's discos and the ‘Leaver’s BBQ’ are run with the aim of giving the children a good time and as a way of thanking families for their continued support for the PTA.

Why Are We A Registered Charity?

The Charities Act 1993 requires organisations such as ours with an annual income in excess of £1,000 to register with the Charity Commission.

As a Charity we must abide by Charity Commission rules and regulations and we are bound by a constitution. Our constitution sets out rules about how we operate as a PTA and how we conduct ourselves. A full copy can be obtained from the PTA Vice Chair.

Being a Registered Charity gives us many extra benefits:
  • We are able to apply for Gift Aid which can earn us an extra 25 pence in every pound donated to the PTA out of earned income
  • We can raise funds more easily from grant giving trusts, local businesses
  • We can take advantage of charity matched giving schemes

Our History

FOWA has always been a major part of the school. Many of the people, who were committee members previously, still help us out in a number of ways today. Some of our staff too, who have had children at our school and who are now adults were also part of the PTA. So you can see we are a very close knit community.

Find us on Facebook

We have a thriving Facebook group where we post messages about events and where members can contact each other. The FOWA facebook group is a closed group which means that posts are only seen by members and not by other people. You find us by searching the Facebook Groups using the term FOWA. If you request to join the group we will approve if you are a school parent.
