Our Curriculum

Our teachers and teaching assistants work together to develop an exciting curriculum that links teaching and learning in Science and the Foundation Subjects (art, DT, history, geography and ICT) with daily teaching of the core subjects of English and Maths. All teaching works to the expectations of the Foundation Curriculum and the National Curriculum for KS1 and 2.
 

Every day we teach and learn phonics, SPaG (spelling, punctuation and grammar) and maths. The children have 2 PE sessions a week and over the year this will include dance, gymnastics, games and athletics. We also take children to sports events, performances and competitions with other schools, and PE provision is further enhanced in school with regular sessions and clubs run by Active Trowbridge. Science and Foundation subjects are taught across the terms to key topics which provide a springboard for teaching and learning in both skills and knowledge in all areas. We are in the process of reviewing our topics across each year to meet the demands of the new curricula and ensure a consistent curriculum journey for every child. So far this year Pirates, Christmas and the Circus have provided the focus for learning in Reception and KS1 while Volcanoes, Christmas and The Vikings have been the starting point for learning in KS2. As a church school we have a daily whole school act of collective worship 4 days a week, and a class act of collective worship on a week, as well as a weekly session of RE teaching. The whole school has a period of quiet reflection after lunch.

 

Ongoing and termly assessment provides a vital tool for teachers in planning the next step, challenges and additional support for children where it is needed. Every term the teaching team and Acting Headteacher discuss the progress and attainment of all children at the school, and identify which children will benefit from extra support or challenges. This includes support in personal development and emotional well-being through our Emotional Literacy Support Assistant (ELSA) Jodi Gilroy, and is also shared with parents, along with resources to support learning at home.

 

We also foster children’s personal development through regular circle times and our Positive Behaviour Policy. We take the opportunity to reward and share positive behaviour and learning as much as we possibly can, through house points, stickers, being on the Rainbow, Ms Jeffries Board of Joy, celebration postcards and certificates at our weekly Celebration Assemblies, which are open to all parents and carers.

 

In Robins (Reception and Year 1) and Skylarks (Years 1 and 2) our topics so far this year are Pirates, Christmas, At the Circus and Castles.

In Eagles (Years 3,4,5 and 6) our topics so far this year are Volcanoes, The Tudors, Christmas, The Vikings and The Rainforest.
 
 
In Key Stage 2 (KS2), because we have two year groups in each class, we plan for lower KS2 (years 3 and 4) and upper KS2 (years 5 and 6) development on a two year cycle. We therefore operate a two year rolling programme to ensure coverage of NC2014 by the end of the Lower or Upper Key Stage.
Upper KS2 follow a 2 year rolling programme also as follows:
