Early Years Curriculum
At West Ashton Primary School our aim is for children to become independent learners who can think and “do” for themselves. We use a child-centred curriculum that is based on the child’s own starting point and use a mix of child-initiated activities and adult-led teaching to enable children to make the most of their education.
The children have daily phonics and maths lessons. The phonics is taught using the letters and sounds program. Maths is taught using the white rose scheme.
The reception class is now part of our EYFS unit which is made up of 3 year old nursery children and reception children. This allows the children to access the complete early years curriculum, throughout their time at EYFS.
We cover the 7 key areas of learning;
- Personal, Social and Emotional Development
- Physical Development
- Communication and Language
- Understanding the World
- Expressive Arts and Design
Throughout the year we use continuous assessment through observations and provision to track progress towards the early learning goals.
