English curriculum overview

English is taught discretely throughout the school in a variety of ways including in English lessons, whole class reading lessons, phonics lessons, spellings lessons and PaG (punctuation and grammar) lessons. Skills in English are also further developed across the curriculum.
Through being taught to write and speak fluently, pupils learn to communicate their ideas and emotions to others; through their reading and listening, others can communicate with them. Through reading in particular, pupils have a chance to develop culturally, emotionally, spiritually and socially. Literature, especially, plays a key role in such development hence children have the opportunity to explore whole-texts as well as excerpts. All children are taught the skills required to be competent speakers, listeners, readers and writers.
