Welcome to Explorers Class!

We are a mixed age Year 1 & 2 class. Our daily learning includes English, Phonics, Maths, Reading and Foundation Subjects. Each term we have a topic and we will be focusing on Science, Geography, RE, Music, PSHE and P.E. On top of this there will be lots of speaking and listening, independent thinking and learning together all mixed up with a lot of fun! P.E. is on a Tuesday.

We send reading books home so please continue to hear your child read as often as possible. An adult will to hear every child read once a week and we will be doing weekly guided reading in class. We will also be learning about SPAG (Spelling, Punctuation, grammar) as well as practicing spelling and handwriting.

Phonics

Using the Little Wandle Letters & Sounds lesson structure, each session will follow the same format of introduce, revisit and review, teach, practise and apply. This ensures that children learn new sounds whilst applying taught sounds to their reading of new words. Children work on decoding, segmenting and blending in every lesson. Children are exposed and use the correct subject specific technical vocabulary (such as phoneme, digraph, trigraph). Our lessons are designed to meet the children’s needs based on our on-going phonic assessments. This informs planning and streaming within year groups.

Once they have settled in the children will bring home spellings to practice on a Monday, to be tested the following Friday and I will introduce times tables and mental maths as the year progresses. Homework is set weekly. Your child will have a homework book in which to complete the activities set, and when we are able to, this will usually be sent home on a Friday to be handed in by the following Wednesday.
